Our editorial standards
This page explains exactly how we pick what goes in a guide, how we make money, and what we will not do. If a guide ever reads like it broke one of these rules, it is a mistake, and we want to hear about it.
Who writes this
Essential Pet Gear is written by pet owners, not a faceless content mill. We live with dogs and cats, so we know the actual problems: a dog that shreds a new toy in five minutes, a cat that ignores every toy you buy, a leash that falls apart by month two. That is the lens every guide is written through.
We are honest about what we are not. We are curators and researchers, not a lab. We do not physically stress-test every product ourselves, and we never pretend otherwise. Our value is doing the comparison work you do not have time for, and telling you the catch.
How we choose what goes in a guide
- Every product we link to is a real, currently listed item. We open the actual product page before it goes into a guide, not just a description someone sent us.
- Where a product has customer reviews, on its Amazon listing or elsewhere, we read them for durability, fit, and the complaints that keep coming up, and we write those into the guide instead of hiding them. Where a product is too new to have reviews yet, we say that plainly instead of inventing them. If something frays on aggressive chewers or runs small, we say so.
- We compare each pick against others in the same category using the same criteria every time: how it holds up to real use, the build and materials, safety, and which pet it actually suits.
- Every pick names who it is not for. A slow feeder does nothing for a calm eater; a heavy-duty chew toy is wasted on a gentle chewer. Naming that is the point.
- Guides get revisited and updated, not published once and left alone. The "Updated" date on a guide reflects a real content change.
What we will not do
- No invented reviews or star ratings. We do not make up testing anecdotes or quote reviews that do not exist. This is a new shop, so where we do not have real customer ratings yet, we say that plainly instead of borrowing numbers.
- No fake urgency. No countdowns, no "grab it before it's gone." On Amazon links we do not even control the price or stock, so urgency copy would be dishonest.
- No paid rankings. No brand pays us to be featured or ranked higher. Rank order reflects our comparison, nothing else.
- No health, diet, or veterinary claims. We cover toys, enrichment, and practical gear. We do not claim a product treats anxiety, aggression, or any medical condition. For anything health related, ask your vet.
How we make money
Two ways, both disclosed. Some links go to Amazon, where we earn the standard Amazon Associates commission if you buy, at no extra cost to you. Other products are sold directly through our own shop. Either way, our revenue never changes how we rank a pick or whether we name its flaws.
