About Regalo Extra Wide Pressure-Mounted Gate

Across a large and mixed sample of reviews, buyers consistently confirm the core mechanics work as advertised: the metal frame feels sturdy for everyday use, the walk-through door and one-hand latch are genuinely usable once you learn the motion, and buyers who need a taller variant report it does a good job containing larger or persistent dogs that a standard-height gate wouldn't stop. Amazon's own review summary echoes this: positive on installation, quality, functionality, and value.

The most genuine recurring complaint is that pressure-mounting alone is often not enough for real security, especially at the top of the gate, which is not a single rigid bar the way the bottom is. Multiple reviewers independently describe the same failure mode: without screwing in the included wall cups, the top of the gate can be pushed or slid loose with moderate pressure, which undercuts the no-drilling pitch for anyone who actually wants it stair-safe or pet-proof against a determined animal.

The Honest Take

What I Like and What I Don't

What I like

  • 173,000+ ratings, the most-reviewed gate in this lineup by far
  • 30 years of the same pressure-mount design, well-understood by reviewers
  • Walk-through door built in
  • A taller 36-inch height variant exists within the same product line and reviewers specifically credit it with stopping larger, persistent dogs that would go over a standard 30-inch gate
  • The one-hand latch mechanism is repeatedly confirmed as genuinely learnable and usable one-handed by multiple independent reviewers once they understood the motion

What holds it back

  • Not rated for the top of stairs
  • Fit is opening-specific, not every width in the 29-49" range works without checking the chart
  • Real security, per multiple reviewers, requires actually screwing in the included wall cups; pressure-mounting alone on the top bar can be pushed loose, which contradicts the no-drilling impression the design suggests
  • The walk-through opening is narrow (one reviewer measured it at about 16 inches), and the door only swings one direction based on which side the hinge is installed on

Is This For You?

Who Should (and Shouldn't) Buy This

Get it if…

You want a metal, walk-through gate for a doorway or hallway (not top of stairs) and are willing to use the included wall-mount screws rather than relying on pressure alone, especially if a determined pet leans on it.

Skip it if…

You specifically need a gate you never drill into walls, or you need a wide walk-through opening for carrying items through regularly.

The verdict

A well-understood, broadly reliable pressure-mount gate that performs close to its reputation, but real-world security depends on using the wall cups rather than pressure alone, and the walk-through door is narrower and more one-directional than the product photos suggest. For getting a dog up onto furniture instead of blocking them from a room, see our pet stairs guide.

What Real Buyers Say

5.0

Fairly easy to install, pressure mounting. If you have strong door frames or walls you don't have to mount this permanently. The latch (and a few other trim parts) is plastic and would be the most likely part prone to breaking. I wish they had used metal. The gap between the bars is 2.5 inches.

4.0

There is no way you can tighten the top of the gate tight enough and make it secure without the use of the anchors. A toddler with sufficient strength can walk over and likely push or bang on this gate until it moves. Because of this, you need to use the anchors.

3.0

The only way this gate will be secure to the wall is to screw on the cups. Because the top of the gate isn't one solid piece, it cannot be compression tightened enough to stay in place. The gate opening is only 16 inches, you cannot carry anything through the gate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can this be used at the top of a staircase?

No. Pressure-mounted gates like this one aren't rated for the top of stairs since a hard bump could push them loose. Use a hardware-mounted gate there instead, and reserve pressure-mount gates for doorways and the bottom of stairs.

Does it fit every opening between 29" and 49"?

Not every width in that range. It fits 29-32" with no extension, and specific ranges with the included 4" and 12" extensions (34-36.5", 41.5-44.5", 46.5-49"). It does not fit 32-34", 36.5-41.5", or 44.5-46.5", so measure your exact opening before buying.
