Best Interactive Cat Toys
A catnip-filled squirrel that flaps when your cat touches it, or a mounted windmill with a spinning LED ball for a cat that plays alone. Plus a wand set for chase play and a turntable for multi-cat homes. Here's how to pick, and why not every cat cares about catnip.

Most cats ignore most toys after the first day. "Interactive" gets stamped on everything from a basic mouse to an expensive robot, but what actually gets used on a bored cat comes down to three things: motion, scent, and whether the toy does something back when your cat engages with it.
We carry a few, and they work through different mechanisms. Three are solo toys: a catnip-filled plush squirrel that flaps when your cat bats or touches it, a windmill toy that mounts with a suction cup and spins an LED ball with a catnip pocket, and a spinning turntable that one cat or several can bat at once without you holding anything. The wand set is the odd one out, it needs you on the other end for chase play.

What actually makes a cat engage with a toy
Three things matter more than the toy's price or how it looks in photos: motion, scent, and texture. Motion mimics prey, a sudden flap or a spinning light triggers the same instinct as a bird or a bug moving in the grass. Scent, mainly catnip, pulls a cat toward a toy it might otherwise walk past. Texture matters once the cat is engaged: something soft enough to bite and kick holds attention longer than hard plastic.
Not every cat responds to catnip. Sensitivity to it is inherited, and a real share of cats (commonly cited around one in three) simply don't react to it at all. If your cat is one of them, motion and texture are doing all the work, and a catnip pocket is just a bonus feature, not a guarantee the toy gets used.

Owner-driven play vs. solo play
Wand toys need a human on the other end, you're the one creating the motion, and that's a real form of play a cat can't replicate alone. The squirrel and windmill toys in this guide are a different category: solo toys that create their own motion or scent without you holding anything. That makes them useful for the hours you're not home, but it doesn't replace wand play. A cat that only ever gets a solo toy and never gets chased-the-string time with you is still an under-stimulated cat, which is why we carry a wand set too.
"Interactive" on the package means the toy reacts to touch or moves on its own, not that it's a substitute for you playing with your cat.
A safety note on battery-powered toys
The flapping squirrel toy is battery-powered. Check that the battery compartment is fully closed and screwed shut before handing it to your cat, and supervise the first few sessions with any new battery-powered toy so you can see how your specific cat interacts with it, some cats chew at seams or compartments more than others.
- Confirm the battery compartment is closed and secured before first use
- Supervise the first few play sessions with any new battery-powered toy
- Stop use and check the toy if the compartment seal looks worn or loose
Pick 1: the pounce and kick pick
This one is for a cat that likes to grab something in its front paws and kick with its back legs, the classic "bunny kick" posture. It's a plush squirrel with a touch-activated flapping motion, powered by a rechargeable battery, with catnip built into the design.
Who should skip it: a cat that's not catnip-sensitive and also isn't a pouncer, some cats prefer watching motion from a distance over grabbing something in their paws. For that cat, the windmill toy below is the better starting point.

PROKEI Pet Toys, Cat Catnip Toys FlappingSquirrel, Rechargeable Touch Activated Kitten Toys, Lifelike Interactive Cats Toy Indoor, CatKicker Plush Toys For All Breeds Universal Interactive Toy Cat Toys
A battery-powered plush squirrel toy with a touch-activated flapping motion. Ships from a US warehouse in 5-7 days, free shipping.
Pick 2: the hands-free, solo play pick
This one is for a cat that plays on its own, especially while you're out of the house. It mounts to a door, window, or any smooth floor with a suction cup, and combines a spinning LED ball with a catnip-filled pocket, available in Blue and Yellow, picked at checkout.
Who should skip it: households without a smooth, flat surface to mount it on, the suction cup needs glass, tile, or a similarly non-porous surface to hold. Carpeted floors or textured walls won't work.

Interactive Windmill Cat Toy With LED Light Ball, Suction Cup, And Catnip Indoor Cat Exercise And Entertainment Set
A suction-cup mounted windmill toy with a spinning LED ball and a catnip-filled pocket, available in Blue and Yellow. Ships from a US warehouse in 3-7 days, free shipping.
Squirrel vs. windmill: how to pick between the top two solo toys
The flapping squirrel is the better fit for a cat that likes to grab and kick something in its paws. The windmill toy is the better fit for hands-free play while you're not home. See the wand set and turntable below if neither solo toy matches how your cat plays.
| Flapping Squirrel Toy | Windmill Toy | |
|---|---|---|
| Best for | Cats that pounce and kick | Cats that play solo, hands-free |
| Mechanism | Touch-activated flapping, catnip | Spinning LED ball, catnip pocket |
| Setup | Handheld or floor, no mounting | Suction-cup mounted, needs a smooth surface |
| Colors | One design | Blue and Yellow, picked at checkout |
| Shipping | 5-7 days, free | 3-7 days, free |
If your cat likes to grab and kick something in its paws, start with the flapping squirrel. If you want a toy that keeps working while you're not home and you have a smooth surface to mount it on, the windmill toy is the better fit. Cats that respond strongly to catnip tend to engage fast with these two solo toys.
Pick 3: the classic cat wand toy
This is the pick for chase and hunting play with you holding the other end, the one style of play a solo toy can't replace. It's a set of 2 retractable wand toys with 9 feather refills, built for the cat that lights up when a person is involved.
Who should skip it: anyone who needs a toy for the hours no one's home, a wand toy only works when someone's holding it. For hands-free play, the squirrel or windmill above are the better fit.

Pick 4: the multi-cat household pick
This is the pick for more than one cat sharing the same toy. It's a 3-level spinning turntable with a feather on a spring, enough separate tracks that two or three cats can each bat their own ball at the same time instead of fighting over one toy.
Who should skip it: a single-cat household on a tight budget, the flapping squirrel or windmill toy above cost less and work just as well for one cat.

3 Level Cat Toy Turntable With Interactive Spring Feather

Frequently asked questions
How long does shipping take?
The flapping squirrel toy ships from our US warehouse in 5-7 days, free. The windmill toy ships in 3-7 days, also free. The wand set and the turntable also ship free from our US warehouse. All four are sold and shipped by Essential Pet Gear.
Does the flapping squirrel toy come with batteries?
It's rechargeable, but whether a charging cable is included isn't confirmed on the listing yet, so we'll update this page once we have a confirmed answer.
What colors does the windmill toy come in?
Blue and Yellow, selected at checkout on our shop.
Will my cat actually respond to the catnip in these toys?
Not necessarily. Catnip sensitivity is inherited, and roughly a third of cats don't react to it at all. The squirrel and windmill toys still work through motion (flapping or a spinning LED ball) even for a cat that ignores the catnip.
Do these replace playing with my cat?
The squirrel, windmill, and turntable are solo or hands-free toys that create their own motion, useful for the hours you're not around. The wand set is the one built for you to hold, if your cat needs that chase-the-string time with a person on the other end.
Is the wand set safe to leave with my cat unsupervised?
No. Wand toys have a string and small feather parts, so they're meant for supervised play, not something to leave in a cat's reach when you're not around.
